Support the National Youth Choir of Canada
“Through this ongoing project we have the opportunity to encourage and nurture our future singers and choral conductors. Helping them to understand, appreciate and value the power of choral music ensures the continuation of the choral tradition in this young, vital country of Canada.” --The late Dr. Diane Loomer, NYCC Conductor 1994
By giving to the National Youth Choir, you help provide young Canadian singers with a truly incredible professional choral experience. Singers are challenged with exciting repertoire under the guidance of Canada’s most esteemed conductors. At the Podium Conference & Festival, they are part of Canada’s largest gathering of choral communities. They meet other singers from across Canada with whom they form lifelong friendships and professional networks. They explore places they may never have been and make a lasting impact on the communities in which they perform and to which they return.
If you prefer to donate by e-transfer, which reduces the charges to Choral Canada, please use [email protected] as the contact email. Choral Canada also appreciates donations of Air Miles or other reward program points which can be used to assist with travel costs for NYCC singers and artistic team. |
Testimonials
“My participation in the NYC in 2004 as a singer and again in 2008 as assistant conductor opened new horizons for me; it allowed me to discover how rich and vibrant the choral scene is and how much I wanted to be a part of this community. This intense sense of passion and community shaped my approach to choral music and led me to grow as a conductor and educator. Being a part of the NYC intensified my passion for choral music and confirmed my desire to pursue music as a career.” --Jean-Sébastien Vallée (2020/2022 Conductor, 2008 Apprentice Conductor, 2004 Singer)
"After years of singing in the Provincial Youth Choir in Nova Scotia it was only natural to audition for the National Youth Choir for the 2014 season with Dr. Hilary Apfelstadt. At the time, being a member of NYC meant singing great repertoire, meeting great people, and doing what I love to do: sing. What I wasn't aware of in that moment was how much NYC would help my career. In 2015, I moved to Toronto and before I knew it I was singing premieres at Koerner Hall and performing with the TSO for a Juno-winning album. I am positive that NYC was a bridge from student choral singer to professional choral singer. Of course it looked great on my resume, but what's more is that it gave me the confidence to pursue a rewarding career and taught me how to be accountable and professional in my journey." --Jodie Miller (2014)

"My time with the National Youth Choir in both 2012 and 2014 was an unforgettable and formative experience. Through this incredible opportunity I made wonderful friendships and valuable professional connections, and thoroughly enriched my own musicianship as a singer and conductor. The benefits gained from the rigorous rehearsal process as well as the opportunity to attend Podium are innumerable. As a chorister for the NYC, you are asked to watch, listen, and sing with greater focus and precision than ever before, while observing nationally and internationally renowned conductors and musicians. It is an enlightening experience, and one that ultimately led to my own study of conducting. I now conduct two of my own choirs, with a focus on healthy singing and a strong sense of community, and feel that I have the best job in the world. I would not have such a rich and meaningful life and career if I had not stepped into the world of musical excellence through the National Youth Choir. Thank you, thank you, thank you!" --Tessa Short (2014, 2012)
"National Youth Choir is an indispensible experience for emerging artists. The challenge of rehearsing and touring a programme in a short time frame allows each singer the opportunity to rise to new heights in their musicianship. It's also an excellent preview of the work environment of professional ensembles. Because of the skills and confidence I gained in National Youth Choir, I was more prepared for the transition from music student to working in professional ensembles." --Kieran Kane (2014)
