NYCC 2022 - Repertoire & Texts

CNJC 2022 - Répertoire et textes |
Make Me A World is a concert addressing important social issues through a diverse array of musical selections. The human voice is the simplest and yet one of the most complex musical instruments. A choir is a micro representation of an ideal society, that is, many individuals with different and unique voices working together diligently to create harmony and unison of intent. Being both vulnerable and powerful, the human voice, especially in choral music, speaks directly to the soul and this is why choral singing is so important. This program is both a reflection on our society and a tribute to our world – a world where music allows us to find common ground and look towards a better and more inclusive future.
Make Me a World will include 2 world premiere commissions - I Forgive by Shireen Abu-Khader and Music is Vibration by Andrew Balfour - as well as the winning piece from Choral Canada's 2022 Competition for Choral Writing, Nicholas Kelly's Wind Rising In The Alleys. |

Rise Up My Love
Laura Hawley | Self-Published | Auto-publié | LAH51
Song of Solomon 2:10-12, Ubi Caritas, Song of Solomon 8:6
“Rise up, my love, my fair one,
And come away.
For lo, the winter is past,
The rain is over and gone.
The flowers appear on the earth;
The time of singing has come,
Ubi caritas et amor, Deus ibi est.
Congregavit nos in unum Christi amor.
Exsultemus, et in ipso jucundemur.
Timeamus, et amemus Deum vivum.
Et ex corde diligamus nos sincero.
[Where charity and love are, God is there.
Christ's love has gathered us into one.
Let us rejoice and be pleased in Him.
Let us fear, and let us love the living God.
And may we love each other with a sincere heart.]
Set me as a seal upon your heart,
As a seal upon your arm

Coro: Brich Dem Hungrigen Dein Brot BWY 39/1
Johann Sebastian Bach | Public Domain | Domaine public

Break your bread with the hungry
and those who are in misery take into your house!
If you see someone naked,
then clothe him and do not withdraw yourself from your own flesh.
And then your light will break forth like the red glow of dawn
and your recovery will quickly increase
and your righteousness will go before you
and the glory of the Lord will take you to itself.

Crooked By Nature
Carmen Braden | CMC | MV 6000 B798cr
Queen Elizabeth I (1588) - from a speech given to troops in Essex preparing for a Spanish invasion
I know I have the body but of a weak and feeble woman but I have the heart and stomach of a king.
Joseph Swetnam (1615) "The Arraignment of Lewd, Idle, Froward [sic] and Unconstant Women" (excerpts)
Women are called Night crows.
Eagles eat not men til they are dead but women devour them alive.
Then who can but say that women sprung from the devil?
And he also saith that they were made of the rib of a man and that their forward nature shows, for the rib is a crooked thing, good for nothing, for women are crooked by nature.
I pray you let us consider the times past with the times present.
Rachel Speght (1617) "A Mouzell for Melastomus*, or an Apologetical Answer to that Irreligious and Illiterate pamphlet made by Joseph Swetnam and by him Entitled The Arraignment of Women." (*A muzzle for the evil mouth - excerpts)
The efficiency of women's creation was Jehovah the eternal.
The truth of which is manifest in Moses' narration.
Yet was she not produced from Adam's foot? Not to be his too low inferior, Nor near his head to be his superior, but from his side near his heart to be his equal.That where he is lord she may be Lady.

Squeeze them, catch them, wipe them out, stare them down.
Pa ti pa toc [etc.]
Kill them, put them death,
Courage, take, strike, kill them.
Be valiant, you noble, brave men.
Strike them down, hurl yourselves at them.
Freshly cast blades, stab them. Alarm, alarm!
Take courage, pursue, strike, hurl.
They're muddled, they're lost.
They're showing their heels.
Let all the weaklings flee the field, armor tinkling.
They are defeated.
Victory to the noble King Francois!
Let all the feeble troublemakers flee the field.

Ring Out Wild Bells

Ring out, wild bells
Alfred Tennyson
O Earth, O Earth, return!
Ring out, wild bells, to the wild sky,
The flying cloud, the frosty light:
The year is dying in the night;
Ring out, wild bells, and let him die.
Ring out the old, ring in the new,
Ring, happy bells, across the snow:
The year is going, let him go;
Ring out the false, ring in the true.
Ring out the grief that saps the mind,
For those that here we see no more;
Ring out the feud of rich and poor,
Ring in redress to all mankind.
Ring out the want, the care, the sin,
The faithless coldness of the time;
Ring out, ring out my mournful rhymes,
But ring the fuller minstrel in.
Ring out old shapes of foul disease;
Ring out the narrowing lust of gold;
Ring out the thousand wars of old,
Ring in the thousand years of peace.

Sonne, cloche éperdue au vertige du ciel,
A la froide lumière, au nuage qui fuit;
Un an s’enfuit; suis-le de ton adieu tremblant;
Qui s’attache à ma vie à jamais désolée ;
La cruelle froideur de cet âge sceptique;
Sonne un glas pour la mort de nos penchants mauvais ;
Pour la guerre pendant vingt siècles souveraine ;

O Guiding Night
Roderick Williams | Oxford University Press | 9780193391567
One dark night,
Fired with love’s urgent longings,
(O the sheer grace!)
I went out unseen,
my house being now all stilled.
On that glad night,
In secret, for no one saw me,
Did I look at anything,
With no other light or guide
Than the one that burned in my heart.
This guided me more surely than the light of noon
To where he was awaiting me
Him I knew so well
There in a place where no one appeared
O guiding night!
O night more lovely than the dawn!
O night that has united the Lover with his beloved,
Transforming the beloved in her Lover.
O guiding night!
O night more lovely than the dawn.
Upon my flowering breast which I kept wholly for him alone
(in secret)
There he lay sleeping,
And I caressing him there in a breeze from the fanning cedars.
O guiding night!
O night more lovely than the dawn.
I abandoned and forgot myself,
Laying my face on my Beloved;
All things ceased;
I went out from myself,
Leaving my cares forgotten among the lilies.
O the sheer grace!
O guiding night!

Ô nuit qui me guide !
Ô nuit qui me guide !
Ô nuit qui me guide !
Ô nuit plus belle que l’aurore.
Je me suis abandonnée, oubliée,
En posant mon visage sur mon bien-aimé,
Toute chose s’est arrêtée ;
Ô nuit qui me guide !

I saw how tears had left their weary traces
Within those eyes that once the sun outshone,
I heard those lips, in low and plaintive moan,
Breathe words to stir the mountains from their places. Love, wisdom, courage, tenderness, and truth
Made in their mourning strains more high and dear Than ever wove soft sounds for mortal ear;
And heaven seemed listening in such saddest ruth The very leaves upon the bough to soothe,
Such sweetness filled the blissful atmosphere.

Children of light, do not stay in the dark;
Truth and Love are stronger than the law.
From the beginning of time the word was spoken:
Darkness and evil had invaded the earth;
Everything was functioning in reverse.
The Lord decided to put order in disorder.
“The Lord said, let there be light: and there was light”
Light in the universe, light in the depths of our hearts.
So many good things in the beautiful flame of this light:
Awareness, development,

Enfants de la lumière, ne restez pas dans le noir ;
Ténèbres et méchanceté avaient envahi la terre ;

We are the sun, we are the heat,
We must shine in all darkness.
We are the stars, we are the light,
We must sparkle for all the earth.
Children of light, do not stay in the dark;
Truth and Love are stronger than the law.
We are the light, the Light is us.
Let us shine day after day.

Enfants de la lumière, ne restez pas dans le noir ;
Ténèbres et méchanceté avaient envahi la terre ;
Enfants de la lumière, ne restez pas dans le noir ;
MUSIC IS VIBRATION (World Premiere | Première mondiale)
Andrew Balfour* | Boosey & Hawkes | M051475902
Music is vibration
Can you see it?
Sound is,
Emotion
Can you feel it?
Music,
Invisible
Intangible
Yet touches deep within
A ringing, a resonance
A returning twin to twin,
Melody is your nature
Can you sing it?
Harmony all your cells
Won’t you dance it?
Plain ole eyes cannot see it
But deep in your heart you do know it

La musique, c’est la vibration
La voyez-vous ?
Le son,
C’est l’émotion
La sentez-vous ?
La musique,
Invisible
Intangible
Nous touche pourtant profondément,
Une sonaillerie, une résonance,
Un retour entre jumeaux,
La mélodie, c’est votre nature
La chantez-vous?
L’harmonie toutes vos cellules

MAKE ME A WORLD
Ruth Watson Henderson* | Boosey & Hawkes 9790051475902
By/par James Weldon Johnson
And God stepped out on space,
And He looked around and said
“I’m lonely –
I’ll make me a world.”
And far as the eye of God could see
Darkness covered ev’rything,
Blacker than a hundred midnights
Down in a cypress swamp.
Then God smiled,
And the light broke,
And the darkness rolled up on one side,
And the light stood shining on the other,
And God said,
That’s good!”
Then God reached out and took the light in His hands,
And God rolled the light around in His hands
Until He made the sun;
And He set that sun ablazing in the heav’ns.
And the light that was left from making the sun
God gathered up in a shining ball
And flung against the darkness,
Spangling the night with the moon and stars.
Then down between the darkness and the light
He hurled the world;
And God said,
“That’s good!”
Then God himself stepped down
And the sun was on His right hand,
And the moon was on His left;
The stars were clustered about His head,
And the earth was under His feet.
And God walked, and where He trod
His footsteps hollowed the valleys out
And bulged the mountains up.
Then He stopped and looked and saw
That the earth was hot and barren.
So God stepped over to the edge of the world
And He spat out the seven seas –
He batted His eyes,
And the lightnings flashed –
He clapped His hands, and the thunder rolled –
And the waters above the earth came down,
The cooling water came down.
Then the green grass sprouted,
And the little red flow’rs blossomed,
The pine tree pointed his finger to the sky,
And the oak spread out his arms;
The lakes cuddle down in the hollows of the ground,
And the rivers ran down to the sea;
And God smiled again,
And the rainbow appeared,
And curled itself around His shoulder.
Then God raised His arm and He waved His hand over the sea and over the land,
And He said, “Bring forth! Bring forth!”
And quicker than God could drop His hand,
Fishes and fowls
And beasts and birds
Swam the rivers and the seas,
Roamed the forests and the woods,
And split the air with their wings,
And God said, “That’s good!”
Then God walked around,
And God looked around
On all that He had made.
He looked at His sun,
And He looked at His moon,
And He looked at His little stars;
He looked on His world
With all its living things,
And God said, “I’m lonely still.”
Then God sat down
On the side of a hill where He could think;
By a deep, wide river He sat down;
With His head in His hands,
God thought and thought,
Till He thought, “I’ll make me a man!”
Up from the bed of a river,
God scooped the clay;
And by the bank of the river
He kneeled Him down;
And there the great God Almighty
Who lit the sun and fixed it in the sky,
Who flung the stars to the most far corner of the night,
Who rounded the earth in the middle of His hand
This Great God,
Like a mammy bending over her baby,
Kneeled down in the dust
Toiling over a lump of clay
Till He shaped it in His own image;
Then into it He blew the breath of life,
And man became a living soul.
Amen.

« Je me sens seul —
Je vais me fabriquer un monde. »
Pour en faire le soleil ;
Il jeta le monde avec force ;
Et Dieu dit,
« C’est bon ! »
Puis l’herbe verte poussa
Et les rivières descendirent vers la mer;
Puis Dieu se promena
Et il regarda, autour de lui,
Tout ce qu’il avait créé.
Il regarda son soleil
Et il regarda sa lune
Et il regarda ses petites étoiles ;
Il regarda son monde
Avec tous ses êtres vivants ;
Et Dieu dit « Je me sens seul encore. »
Puis Dieu s’assit
Sur le flanc d’une colline pour penser ;
Il s’assit au bord d’une rivière profonde et large ;
Dans le lit d’une rivière
Dieu creusa l’argile ;
Et au bord de la rivière
Il se mit à genoux ;
Amen.

NOTHING GOLD CAN STAY

Nature’s first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf’s a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.

Rien ne peut rester d'or.
