2026 NYCC PROGRAMME
Our PRAISE – OUR LAMENT
Lobet den Herrn – Johann Sebastian Bach

Lobet den Herrn, alle Heiden,
und preiset ihn, alle Völker!
Denn seine Gnade und Wahrheit
waltet über uns in Ewigkeit.
Alleluja.

Praise the Lord, all the heathens
And celebrate him, all the peoples!
For his grace and truth
Reign over us forever.
Alleluia!

Pakaskitawew – Henry Purcell/Andrew Balfour* (arr.)

quoniam amaritudine plena sum:
foris interfecit gladius et domi mors similis est.
Idcirco ego plorans et oculus meus deducens aquas:
quia longe factus est a me consolator, convertens animam meam:
facti sunt filii mei, perditi quoniam invaluit inimicus.
Persequeris in furore et conteres eos sub coelis Domine.
Is it nothing to you, all you who pass by?
Look around and see. Is any suffering like my suffering that was
inflicted on me,

That the Lord brought on me in the day of his fierce anger?
See, O Lord, how distressed I am!
I am in torment within, and in my heart I am disturbed,
for I have been most rebellious.
Outside, the sword bereaves; inside there is only death.
This is why I weep and my eyes overflow with tears.
No one is near to comfort me, no one to restore my spirit.
My children are destitute because the enemy has prevailed.
Pursue them in anger and destroy them from under the heavens of the Lord.
OUR ANCESTORS
Parlez-moi - France Levasseur-Ouimet*/Allan Bevan* (arr.)

Je cherche un peu partout
Dans l’espoir de trouver
Quel qu’un qui connait bien la mer et son halein’ salé
Qui pourrait bien me dire

Dîtes-moi, parlez-moi
I search everywhere in the hope of finding someone who knows the salty breath of the sea, someone who can tell me why the sound of the waves on the shore and the pure and liquid song of the sea flow through my very being.

Speak to me of the sea. Tell me its story so that I may become a sailor.
I spoke of the prairies to the elders of my country but they could not help me. They did not understand me. They spoke of time that is lost in forgetfulness, of loneliness, of solitude but of the prairies they said nothing.

Speak to me of the prairies. Tell me their story so that I may be able to see beyond the horizon.

I spoke to my mother. She knows so well all the great legendary heroes of which we no longer speak. She spoke to me of hope, of death, of life, of love, of giving and of grief. But of the earth she did not speak. Teach me the earth and the sea and the prairies so that I may understand them. Give me the words that I need.

Speak to me of the earth. Tell me its story so that I may become its guardian.

Grand-mother
Can I lay down next to you for a while?
Can you tell me about life
When you were young
When our land was bigger
OUR SORROW – OUR JOY
We are Carried – Scott Reimer

We are carried
In life,

In hopes,in dreams,
In wombs,in arms,
In hands,in hearts,

In love,in grief,
In life,in prayers,
In death,in memory.

In all things,
At all times,
We are carried.

Speak to us of Joy - Sami Anguaya
On Joy and Sorrow By: Kahlil Gibran

Then a woman said, Speak to us of Joy and Sorrow.
And he answered:
Your joy is your sorrow unmasked.
And the selfsame well from which your laughter rises was oftentimes filled with your tears.
And how else can it be?
The deeper that sorrow carves into your being, the more joy you can contain.
Is not the cup that holds your wine the very cup that was burned in the potter’s oven?
And is not the lute that soothes your spirit, the very wood that was hollowed with knives?
When you are joyous, look deep into your heart and you shall find it is only that which has given you sorrow that is giving you joy.
When you are sorrowful look again in your heart, and you shall see that in truth you are weeping
for that which has been your delight.
Some of you say, “Joy is greater than sorrow,” and others say, “Nay, sorrow is the greater.”
But I say unto you, they are inseparable.
Together they come, and when one sits alone with you at your board, remember that the other is
asleep upon your bed.
Verily you are suspended like scales between your sorrow and your joy.
Only when you are empty are you at standstill and balanced.
When the treasure-keeper lifts you to weigh his gold and his silver, needs must your joy or your
sorrow rise or fall.

Puudutus - Tõnu Kõrvits

Puuduta mind oma tulise palgega
nii et on ilus ja valus.
Oma silmade sinimustvalgega
puuduta veel, ma palun.

Refr:

Kas tunned kuis meile ikka on lahti

kõige kõrgemad taeva teed,
kui tuleme kokku, kui leiame mahti,
jätame vaevad ja laulame.

Rüüpa mu elust januse sõõmuga,
kõige kaunimad ajad.
Puudutan Sind oma rahu ja rõõmuga
nõnda palju kui vajad.

Refr:

Puuduta mind oma headuse väega,
ainsaga, millel on väärtust.
Õnnista oma sileda käega
minu karget saatust.

Refr:
Puuduta mind oma tulise palgega
nii et on ilus ja valus.
Oma silmade sinimustvalgega,

puuduta veel, ma palun.

Touch me if you will with your fiery features, make it beautiful – painfully so. Please let the blue black and white of your eyes touch me again I pray you.

Refr: Do you feel how the heavens’ highest roads before us lie ever open. When we come together, when we take the time, leaving our troubles behind, we can sing.

Drink a deep and thirsty draught from my life of its very loveliest moments. I will touch you with the peace and joy within me as much as you may want. Refr.

Touch me with the power of your goodness, of all things the only treasure, bless if you will with your smooth, sleek hand my own fate, rough and tattered. Refr.

Touch me if you will with your fiery features, make it beautiful – painfully so.
Please let the blue black and white of your eyes touch me again I pray you.
MY VOICE
Where is My Voice? - Shane Raman

Silenced Voices of ancestors,
sing in the air,
speak of injustice,
ignored by histories.
Where is my voice?
We are their stories.

Guard My Tongue - Julia Wolfe

Guard my tongue from speaking evil,
and my lips from speaking deceit.

Through the Noise - Katerina Gimon

Lost in the noise of life.

Some days I’m lost,
Some days I’m lost
in the noise of life.

I feel its weight
just like a wave
I can’t escape.

How fast it moves,
How it consumes
all that it touches.

It’s hard to find
a voice that’s mine
in all this noise.

But still, I mean to rise,
I mean to rise
like a stream of light.
To lead with love
and to be brave
even when it’s tough.

To mold and shape
this world, this place
that we’ve been left to fix.

To turn the page
on past mistakes
and keep on trying
even when things look stark.

Oh, is this our voice
behind all this noise?
Oh, is this our voice
lost somewhere behind this noise?
Oh, somewhere in there, (Listen close, it’s there.)
our voice… (Listen, we’re still here…)

We are kindness.
We are hope.
We are misunderstood.
We are change.

This is our voice.

This is our heart
beneath it all.
This is our dream,
this is our cause.
This is our voice
behind the noise.

This is our voice!
Spoken text (1):

Being a young person today means trying to find a voice
in a world of noise.

Being hyper-aware of how fast the world moves,
and struggling to stay present and focused.

Trying to foster sincerity in an online world
where everything is ironic and a joke.

Trying to stop wasting my time on my phone.

Trying to stop worrying about wasted time.

Trying to carry the pressure placed on us
by past generations to “fix” things

Trying to foster community in an
increasingly individualistic world.

Trying to be optimistic and
help others be optimistic too.

Spoken text (2):

The strength of our generation is genuine care.
We are reflections of those around us in different shapes.
We are adapting to how we need to thrive in a changing society.
We want to pave ways for the next passionate young people.
Misunderstood, misjudged, unheard.
We are growing and learning, still becoming.
We are finding our courage.
We are ready and capable.
Ready to fly.
